Description:  California's climate can be hot and dry and cold and damp. There can be seasons of record breaking precipitation and long years of drought. To help California cope with floods and survive droughts, reservoirs were built to capture flood water and seasonal runoff, gradually releasing water downstream as needed. Intricate conveyance systems were also skillfully engineered to supply water for our growing population and economy and to maintain abundant harvests. Using water to protect and restore our natural environment has also become an important part of our values. Although our water projects have performed well, new ideas and diverse strategies are required to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply for the near and distant future.
